Cada ilha dos Açores (ver mapa) é constituída por um ou mais concelhos, sendo cada concelho formado por freguesias, conhecidas pelo nome administrativo ou pelo orago.
Antes de 31 de março de 1911, a maior parte dos indivíduos era registado pela Igreja Católica. Depois da Revolução Liberal foi criado o Registo Civil para os não católicos, mas o número de indivíduos abrangidos por este organismo era diminuto.
Com a criação dos Arquivos nos ex-distritos de Ponta Delgada (ilhas de Santa Maria e São Miguel - Decreto Lei nr. 20484 de 27 de junho de 1931), Angra do Heroísmo (ilhas Terceira, Graciosa e São Jorge - Decreto Lei nr. 36842 de 20 de abril de 1948) e Horta (ilhas do Faial, Pico, Flores e Corvo - Decreto Lei nr. 46350, de 22 de maio de 1965), foi transferida a documentação existente nas igrejas para os arquivos regionais.
Note-se que os Registos Civis de cada concelho guardam os registos paroquiais por um período de 100 anos, após os quais, de cinco em cinco anos, são incorporados nos Arquivos Regionais correspondentes (Angra do Heroísmo, Horta e Ponta Delgada). A documentação produzida por instituições públicas (tribunais, notários e registo civil) é incorporada nos prazos legais, no Arquivo Regional correspondente.
Para iniciar a pesquisa genealógica é necessário conhecer a ilha e a freguesia onde ocorreu o ato administrativo respeitante a um dos antepassados. Os documentos que servem de base para a pesquisa genealógica são os seguintes:
- Assentos de batismo;
- Assentos de casamento;
- Assentos de óbito.
Estes documentos foram alterados, ao longo dos séculos, na sua redação e na informação veiculada. Podemos estabelecer três momentos distintos: o primeiro, que vai desde o séc. XVI até finais do séc. XVII; o segundo, desde finais do séc. XVII até 30 de junho de 1860; e o terceiro momento, de 1 de julho de 1860 até 31 de março de 1911. A partir de 1 de abril de 1911, o Registo Civil foi generalizado a toda a população portuguesa.
Os registos paroquiais do arquipélago dos Açores, disponíveis online no conteúdo Registos Paroquiais e de Passaportes dos Açores, abrangem o período de 1541 a 1911. Os originais encontram-se nas Bibliotecas Públicas e Arquivos Regionais dos Açores de Ponta Delgada (S. Miguel), Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira) e Horta (Faial).
Este núcleo documental corresponde a 904.543 imagens/ficheiros online. A qualidade inferior de algumas imagens resulta do estado de conservação dos originais e, em alguns casos, apenas é possível visionar parte dos documentos, porque os originais se encontram incompletos ou muito degradados. Noutros casos existem lapsos de documentos, pela inexistência dos mesmos, nas Bibliotecas Públicas e Arquivos Regionais.
Pretendemos prestar um serviço que possibilite a todos, onde quer que se encontrem, aceder à pesquisa sobre o passado. Desta partilha resulta seguramente o contributo, por parte de cada um de vós, para um maior conhecimento sobre a história dos Açores.

Parish Records of the Azores
Each Azorean Island (see map) is organized into one or more administrative districts, each being divided into parishes, known by their administrative name or by their patron saint.
Before March, the 31st, 1911, the majority of individuals were registered by the Catholic Church. After the Liberal Revolution, the Civil Registration for non-catholics was created, but the number of individuals covered by this organism was rather small.
With the creation of Archives in the ex-administrative districts of Ponta Delgada (islands of Santa Maria and São Miguel – Decree-Law nr. 20484 of June, the 27th, 1931), Angra do Heroísmo (islands of Terceira, Graciosa and São Jorge – Decree-Law nr. 36842 of April, the 20th, 1948) and Horta (islands of Faial, Pico, Flores and Corvo – Decree-Law nr. 46350, of May, the 22nd, 1965) the documents kept by churches were transferred to the regional archives.
Note that the Civil Registration of each administrative district keeps the parish records for a period of 100 years, after which, every five years, these are incorporated into the corresponding Regional Archives (Angra do Heroísmo, Horta and Ponta Delgada). The documents produced by public institutions (courts, notaries and civil registration) are incorporated within legal deadlines, in the corresponding Regional Archive.
To begin the genealogical research you have to know the island and the parish, in which the administrative act, concerning one of the ancestors, took place. The documents used as a basis for the genealogical research are the following:
- baptism certificate;
- marriage certificate;
- death certificate.
These documents changed, through the centuries, in their wording and in the information they provided. We can establish three distinct moments in this evolution: the first, from the 16th century until the end of the 17th century; the second, from the end of the 17th century until June, the 30th, 1860; and the third, from July, the 1st, 1860, until March, the 31st, 1911. From April, the 1st, 1911, on, Civil Registration became extensive to all Portuguese population.
The parish records of the Azores, available online in the content Fundos Paroquiais dos Açores /Parish Records of the Azores, cover the period between 1541 and 1911. The original documents lie in the Public Libraries and Regional Archives of the Azores, in Ponta Delgada (S. Miguel), Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira) and Horta (Faial).
This documental core contains 904.543 online images/files. The lower quality of some images results from the conservation status of the originals and, in some cases, you can only view part of the documents, because the originals are incomplete or very decayed. In some other cases, there are gaps because the very documents are missing from the Public Libraries and Regional Archives.
We want to provide a service that will enable anyone, despite the location, to access research on the past. From the sharing of this experience surely results the contribution, from each of you, to a greater knowledge on the history of the Azores.
